R032 - About the cartoons

The clarity of Magdi Allam should be encouraged in every way: it expresses what many think but few say out loud, which is why it is under fire by those who feel guilty: it is the Muslims who deny the historical fact and who ignore the spiritual content of the Koran. History continues to repeat itself. In my opinion only a firm stance of one’s own cultural conviction and identity will make us respect by our opponents., without hesitation and without excuses. On the contrary, I am convinced that many intellectuals in Arab countries have accepted the historical truths declared by Pope Ratzinger, but they cannot do so openly: not everyone has the desire to live under escort.

In conclusion: it should be remembered that the Pope is the head of a State with diplomatic relations with almost all the states of the world, his diplomatic structure should demand from their respective governments the public denials of the preachers of hatred who have stirred the hearts of defenseless people and mired a head of state by threatening him with death.

R033 - Is there Freedom of expression in Italy?

FAX – 24/2/2007

(Read the browseable version)

Are we still in time to criticize the sharia and protest freely in Italy?

I don’t want to argue, but you haven’t addressed the underlying problem.

I would like to point out that Sharia law is the source of all the constitutional systems of Arab and Muslim countries, which explicitly considers non-Muslim citizens to be second or third category citizens and their rights. This is a discrimination of the fascist Nazi type.

In these situations one cannot speak of percentages or minorities when freedom of expression is not allowed. The case of the Alexandrian blogger with four years in prison is only one of the many examples. The basic problem must be raised and addressed in those countries where it can still be done without having to resort to escorts of Carabinieri (Italian Military Police) or be judged by certain magistrates as defamatory of the Islamic religion. Are we still in time to criticize Sharia law and protest freely in Italy?

2012: Islamophobia: double standards

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which wants “laws against incitement to religious hatred,” says that “freedom of expression must be used responsibly,” asks us “to take all measures including legislation against acts that lead to violence against Muslims and the denigration of their religion” because “Islamophobic acts violate the freedom of religion and belief.

This is while Islamist propaganda is charged with every stereotype of Jews and Christians, while the most insane violence is used against members of different faiths and their co-religionists considered to be conniving with the enemy, while Western embassies, Christians during mass and Jews are attacked.

R036 - A gesture of courage

CORSERA – 24/7/2016

My Muslim friends draw their faith from the Koran, from their sermons, from their personal effort and the environment in which they live. The “jihadist” terrorists also draw on the same sources, Koranic preaching and incitements to live the “true Islam”. Therefore, the courageous gestures that I feel I can ask of all Muslims, is a condemnation expressed with greater firmness especially by civil society, religious movements and the vast world of mosques.

In my opinion, terrorism can be defeated through the support of the majority of Muslims who love peace and who condemn terrorism. Only in this way you can start a process of rooting out radical Islamic sentiments, where hatreds and resentments towards an enemy and colonizing west are fueled.

R039 - Which Islam?

Reflections – 2011

  1. It is essential to ask the Arab world to work on education, the media, and textbooks in schools and even to invite them along this line of education and peace. Imams and preachers have the formidable instrument of preaching in mosques, where it would be appropriate to proclaim also the verses of the Koran which underline God’s will towards religious pluralism and the commitment to compete for good in God’s Mercy.
  2. I believe that it is essential to ask the Arab world to work on education, the media, textbooks in schools and even to invite to this line of education and peace those imams and preachers who have in their hands the formidable instrument of preaching in mosques, where it would be appropriate to proclaim also the verses of the Koran that underline God’s will to religious plurality and the commitment to compete for good in God’s Mercy. Rather, implement a strategy to aim for this result.
  3. According to one of the 138 Muslim theologians, the main extender of the response to the Pope, the Koran should be read in its entirety, it would be wrong theologically speaking to extract and quote a verse in its own right and comment on it without taking into account the text as a whole. In fact the Meccana part is different from the part following Medina: So what is the “thought of Koranic GOD or rather of ALLAH”? This explains the difficulty of defining what the true Islam outside of stereotypes is.

In practice today as today the definitions coming from the strong powers of the petrodollars are valid. A political Islam against which a divided Christianity (Catholics, Orthodox etc.) proves to be weaker as an opposing force. In my opinion, the redemption must start from changing the hearts of men with the services and all the means available.
